Beauty Buys + A Gift

Every once in a while a girl's got to treat herself to a few nice little things...or one big thing.  And since the "one big thing" on my list costs more than what I'm willing (or able at this time) to pay, I decided to treat myself to some cute little items that I could easily tick off my list without blowing the budget and setting off the account police (my wonderful hubby).  Here are some of my most recent beauty buys and a cool gift from my mommy:

A Valentine's Day gift to myself:

A beauty blender and the Core Collection & Starter Kit from Real Techniques.  I've been hearing so many good things about the brushes I decided to go on and get them.  The collections along with the large power brush, only cost $40.00 at Ulta. A steal for the quality, really.  I'll give a full review once I get to try them out more than a few times.

Then just when I thought I was completely missing out on the Rihanna Hearts Mac collection, my mom tells me that she bought it for me when it came out because she thought I'd like them.  Uh, heck yeeeeaah!  But then get this:  She JUST gave them to me last week because she kept forgetting about them every time we saw each other. LOL! Do you know how many times we've seen each other since this set came out? More than I can count.  Anyway, all that matters is that I have them now and I am in love with the packaging.
hot. funky. fly!
The best part is, Spring 2014 is all about gilded lids so this will be getting plenty of use.
And did I mention I'm loving this packaging--I can't even stop talking about it. lol!

Beauty | Smoldering Eyes Velvet Lips

how to create a smoldering smoky eye - beauty and makeup blog

I posted a date night makeup look on instagram not too long ago and got some responses about my makeup and the color of my lipstick.  I decided later to recreate that look and share the tutorial.
When I originally created then look, I remember wanting something neutral but taken a tad bit further with soft smoky eyeliner.  Out of that came the Smoldering Eyes Velvet Lips makeup look.

This lippie's texture isn't velvet but I names it that for another, more nostalgic reason.  The color of the lipstick reminded me of this velvet dress my mom had when I was a little girl.  I used to always sneak into my parents' wardrobe just to rub the material against my cheek.  I was so fascinated by the way velvet felt different depending on which direction you swiped your hand across the fabric. Ah, memories.

Anyhow, I plan to do another take on a velvet lip soon.  That'll be fun.

Beauty | Soap & Glory

Soap & Glory Products Review - Scrub of Your Life, Righteous Butter, Clean on Me, Flake Away Body Pollish

Just on a whim last August, I purchased my first ever product from Soap & Glory--the Flake Away Body Polish and let me tell you, it was love at first scrub!  Now, I know I told you all this before but I am an exfoliating fiend and there is nothing more luxurious feeling than when I glide my hand over my shoulder and it's silky soft and smooth.  Ooh, it just makes me feel so wonderfully girly to be so soft.

I digress.  Right after having a great experience with the Body Polish, I wanted to see what else Soap & Glory had going for them so I purchased the S&G Beginner's Luxe Set in November.  I hadn't actually started using it until February but let me just tell ya, Soap & Glory is the bomb!  The Beginner Luxe Set comes with of The Righteous Butter (a creamy smooth body butter), Clean on Me (Creme body wash), The Scrub of Your Life (a smoothing body buffer) & an exfoliating glove. These all come packaged in this cute travel bag which I'll be using long after I've used up the the products in this set.

The fragrance might be a tad strong for some but I love it because it's got Bergamot which is my absolute favorite fragrance note.  The scent doesn't linger on strong after the product is rinsed away for those of you wondering.

I purchased it on Sephora.com at a steal for $30.00.  This particular set is no longer available but these products do come in other sets and are sold individually. (Thus, more evidence of what a lackadaisical blogger I've been. Sorry.)

Natural Hair | Blow Out & Braid Out + Length Check

It had been a while since I'd straightened or even blew out my hair and so last month I decided I'd go for something a little bit different.  I never really did braid outs on my hair often because I'm a twist out and flat twist out kind of girl.  Lately though, I like for my hair to hang a little more and braid outs give a little more stretch than my typical twist out.

To achieve this style, I applied Ion Heat Protection Spray & Koils By Nature Shealoe Leave-In Conditioner before blowing my hair out using the tension method.
Then I used Oyin Burnt Sugar Pomade and a tiny bit of Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque before braiding my hair in 3 sections.

I braided my hair until I was about an inch and a half away from the end and then twirled the end around my finger to make a spiral curl.  This gives the style a much more finished look as opposed to braiding all the way do to the ends.

Also when I blew out my hair, I decided to do a length check as well.  This is the first one since I've cut my hair and I don't know why I hadn't done one sooner. I'd been thinking about cutting my hair again but I have decided to challenge myself to let it grow out.  I love cutting my hair so keeping the scissors away from it will surely be a challenge.
